Black-and-white and colorful, large and small – this spring, the classic polka-dot print returns to our wardrobes in new variations and reminds us that cold and grey winter is behind us.
The classic polka-dot print is never out of fashion for several decades, but it gets a new sound every season. At the time, Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich and Jackie Kennedy adored it, but modern girls also love it, choosing printed light blouses, dresses, pantsuits, coats, bags and accessories.
The print got its name in honor of the famous polka dance, although it had nothing in common with it, and was much more common in suits for passionate flamenco. It became really popular among women thanks to Christian Dior, who devoted one of his collections to this pattern and opened the way to the world of high fashion in the 50’s.

Max Mara |
Celine |
In the spring-summer 2020 season, our eyes dazzled from a variety of polka-dot print on the catwalks of major fashion weeks. Balmain, Dries Van Noten and Celine decided to turn to black-and-white classics, emphasizing its strictness with complex multi-layered silhouettes and draping, that create an optical illusion effect. Lightweight fabric and midi length – you can wear dresses with pumps, ankle boots and rough boots in military style, complementing the look with monochromatic accessories.

Paul & Joe |
Michael Kors |
Moschino |
Gucci, Michael Kors, Moschino and Paul & Joe prefer bright red, orange, turquoise and emerald fabrics, showing that even such a conservative print may look different in the spring of 2020. Completely departing from the ideas of minimalism and referring to pomposity, designers invite to wear these dresses with colored shoes, massive shiny accessories, unusual tights and bags of geometric shapes. For sure, such looks won’t work with offices and business meetings, but they can safely conquer the party and light up on the dance floor.
Sacai |
Altuzarra |
Carolina Herrera |
Altuzarra, Sacai and Carolina Herrera focus on the combination of polka dot of different sizes, finding another topical application for it. Their outfits harmoniously combine both large circles and small scattering spots. The contrast between them is enhanced by unusual silhouettes and the almost complete lack of accessories.
Dries Van Noten |
Paco Rabanne |
Maison Margiela |
Inventing something new, Dries Van Noten spreads large polka-dot all over the dress at a great distance from each other, Paco Rabanne paints them in all colors of the rainbow, while Maison Margiela gives more volume due to the light and translucent fabric, putting the bullet in the debate on the relevance of the polka-dot this season.

For everyday looks, it’s better to choose a traditional black and white or beige-white color scheme, but evening outfits can be as bright, as possible. But in this case, it’s better to stop at plain and elegant accessories, bags and shoes, so as not to look too colorful.
