It is believed that the first short female haircut was made by the French hairdresser Antoine de Paris back in 1909. He was inspired by the image of Joan of Arc, who, as you know, cut her hair like a young man, so that it would be more convenient to fight the English invaders.
However, a real sensation was made a year later by the American dancer Irene Castle. She appeared in public with a hairstyle that would later be called a "bob" - rounded and so short that her neck was visible.
