Recently, a new trailer for the musical Cats with Taylor Swift, playing the leading role, appeared on the Web. It became known that the film could receive a Golden Globe nomination (Earlier reports had suggested that the film would not be vying for end-of-year awards because it isn’t done yet). The film may be nominated in the "Best Musical or Comedy" category. The first film screenings for the press will take place in early December. The Golden Globe nominations are announced on Dec. 9, and HFPA members must see all 2019 films by Dec. 4.
The film is based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1981 popular musical. Unlike the original production, in which the actors played in specially tailored costumes, the filmmakers gave preference to modern CGI technology - the appearance of the main characters was modeled using three-dimensional computer graphics.
Nevertheless, first viewers ambiguously perceived early footage, which was published on Tuesday. For example, commentators were dissatisfied with the appearance of the main characters and the graphics, which seemed to them too outdated.
Universal is hoping there’s a big enough holiday moviegoing audience to make a hit of “Cats,” which opens Dec. 20. In addition to Swift, Idris Elba, Judy Dench, Ian McKelen and Rebel Wilson also starred in the film. By the way, the leading, singer Taylor Swift, was nominated for a Grammy Award for “Best Song” the day before.
