Top Banana! How Brands Echo the Sensational Piece of Art

Two bananas, duct-taped to a wall by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan at the Art Bassel fair, Miami, were sold for $ 120,000 each. The man named his installation, consisting of two objects, Comedian. Cattelan hatched the idea of this art performance for several years and first wanted to use bananas from bronze or rubber, but in the end he just bought them at a regular supermarket.

The artist claims that this is not a joke or an attempt to mock the trends of contemporary art. He admits that he carefully thought out all the details of the art object: from the shape of the fruit to the angle at which it will hang. Cattelan doesn’t want to reveal the meaning of his work, he says only that he chose a banana as a means of international trade and presented it as an object worthy of admiration.

Two fruits were sold out at once - copyright certificates are attached to them, and several art galleries are currently fighting for the third. This news instantly became widespread. People started sticking not only fruits, but also other objects to the walls, someone even managed to do this trick with their pets (but we don’t encourage this idea). Many brands decided to keep up with the trends and repeat the Cattelan’s masterpiece, only each in its own way.
